AT&T Workers to Rally at Shareholder Meeting, Prepare to Strike

On Friday, April 27, hundreds of AT&T workers who are members of Communications Workers of America will rally outside AT&T’s annual shareholder meeting in Dallas, TX, and call on the company to negotiate a fair contract that keeps family-supporting jobs in their communities, just days after a new report examined the telecom giant’s continued role in hollowing out the middle class. Friday’s action comes as 14,000 AT&T workers covered by AT&T’s Midwest and Legacy T contracts have voted to authorize a strike if the telecom giant refuses to offer real solutions at the bargaining table.

Though AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson promised that every $1 billion in tax savings would create “7,000 good jobs for the middle class,” the company announced more than 1,500 layoffs just days after the tax bill became law. These most recent layoffs have compounded workers’ concerns about the company’s practice of shifting work to low-wage overseas contractors, which many believe is hurting the quality of service and damaging AT&T’s brand.

While AT&T refuses to release details about plans for its $20 billion in tax savings, a report released earlier this week by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) finds that AT&T has closed 44 call centers and eliminated 16,000 call center jobs in the last seven years. The report reveals the devastating impact of recent call center closures across the Midwest, an area that has been particularly hard hit by closures and layoffs.
